November 22/08

Today we've got a crew going around the Motel shrinkwrapping windows. Pray for safety as they work.

Also, pray for the manager of the Motel. His family is struggling with some significant health issues. Pray for healing and for peace of mind in the middle of a very difficult time.

Hi,

I just wanted to pass on a need that we're facing right now.
The chairs we use for Dinner each week are old and many are getting wobbly. In addition, we don't have enough tables for everyone to sit at.

If you, or someone you know, has some chairs or tables to pass on to us, we'd really appreciate it.

Thanks,

Ruth Wilkinson

October 20/08

Hi,

Just a note to remind you that our meet and greet for those interested in, or already, working with the disadvantaged in Northumberland will be held Tuesday October 21, 7:00 pm at First Baptist Church in Port Hope.

The evening is being organized by the Greenwood Tower Initiative and we'll have information and brief presentations from a number of organizations and individuals in the area doing this kind of work.

Hope to see you there.

September 30/08

Pray for safety today for two beautiful people who are helping S and her family move to the city next door.

It's pouring rain and they've got a pickup truck full of boxes pulling a trailer full of appliances and furniture.

It's a long drive from here to there and it's going to take two trips.

Thanks,

Ruth

September 11/08

Hi, again.

We found out a week ago that some of our friends, a family with young kids, is moving out and up to a small city north of here. They'll be getting a 3 bedroom house with Public Housing. We'll miss them, but we're really glad for them. The little one has been learning to count by practicing on cop cars driving through the parking lot.

Thank you for your prayers over the last few weeks. Things have been a bit more peaceful to end the summer and we're grateful for the rest.

As we head into winter, there are some questions that need to be answered for us to continue confidently. We're all dreading the idea of shivering through Dinner week after week like we did last year, and the cost of heating the large room is huge, made worse by the absence of insulation, the windows that are stuck open and the inefficient base board heaters. Makes sitting around to play euchre or play the piano really unattractive!

Where we're at right now, is face to face with a couple of significant decisions. Because of the nature of our relationship with the owner of the Motel, we've decided to keep the specifics vague (an oxymoron, I know).

But we really do covet your prayers.

  • Please pray that a good door will open and that we'll find favour with those with whom we need to find favour.
  • Pray that God will give us direction and guidance and show us what the best path is.
  • Pray that we'll be wise, and "gentle as doves and wise as serpents" in dealing with tricky relationships.
  • And continue to pray that the person we need to see come to fill a particular role will be brought our way.
Is that vague enough? :-)
  • Pray for our new team members from St. John's Anglican, for energy and love and safety.
There's so much at stake here for this invisible group of disinherited people, that we must be wise in balancing boldness with babysteps. Please keep praying for us.

Thanks.

Hi, all.

I just wanted to put it out there that if anyone has an old XP laptop that you're not using anymore, we could use it.

If anything comes up, let me know.

Thanks,

Hi, all.

Many thanks to offer right now.

Thanks to those of you who made donations to help send our young friend to camp. She's off next week and really looking forward to it. It's fantastic that she'll have a week away from the Motel to have fun, learn about God and enjoy the world.

Thanks to the individuals and groups whose contributions this summer have made it possible for Dinners to continue all the way through. St. John's Anglican in Port Hope, Grace Evangelical Missionary, Brenda's group, Judy's group, the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Port Hope have all stepped up and worked along with us to make it work. We've only got the last week in August and the first in September uncovered.

We're thrilled that St. John's will be continuing to share once a month going into the fall.

Thanks to those of you who've been praying for us. We've had a sometimes bizarre and scary summer and everything is still as unsettled and unsettling as ever. So many of our friends are dealing with health issues (COPD, angina, blood pressure, circulatory problems, back and neck trouble, HepC etc.), many with addiction issues, depression and other mental illnesses that we can't really understand. Our friend G is going in this week for heart surgery and won't be home for a week or so. Her man isn't going to be able to go visit her, so it's difficult for both of them.

Please pray for M&M. We don't really know where they are right now, but they're probably living in a tent somewhere nearby. Pray for safety and mental health.

Please pray for wisdom for us as we find ways to work around the things that would otherwise be obstacles and that our hearts won't harden.

Please pray that God will fill one role in our team that needs to be filled. There's a particular type of person we need to see come along before we can take a next step. We'll know them when we see them, but we don't want to push or recruit or pursue. We want to trust God to bring them in his time, just as he has been doing with people from the start. Pray that we'll be wise in what we 'bind and loose'.

Thanks again for being there and I hope to send more consistent prayer letters in the future.

June 19/08

Hi,

First I want to thank all of you who've been praying for us. It's been a rough and sometimes scary week for some of us and we've been grateful to be able to draw on strength that's greater than our own.

Second I want to ask you for a favour. There's a girl in our community who our church is sending to camp for a week. As many of you know this is expensive. The camp is paying for half, and the church is paying the other half.

If any of you are able to contribute 10 or 20 bucks to help us with this, we'd really appreciate it. Donations can be dropped off at Searchlight bookstore in Cobourg, or Grace Evangelical Missionary in Port Hope and they'll pass it on to us. If you need a receipt, include your name, phone number and mailing address.

Thanks.
